Fry those Tomatoes

I think it is time to weigh in on the latest pandemonium that is sweeping the country... not the gas crisis (although Bill has a solution for that as well)
I am talking about the recent salmonella scare in tomatoes.
We have a solution...

Fry those tomatoes before they turn red!

I don't think Salmonella will survive in a bath of 400° grease. Here is our best recipe.
Fried Green Tomatoes
3-4 green tomatoes
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 cup corn meal
1/2 tsp salt & pepper
milk
vegetable oil

Mix together flour, cornmeal, salt & pepper. Add enough milk to create a thick batter. Heat 2 inches of oil in a large skillet. Batter each tomato slice, and wipe off excess. Carefully place in hot oil, browning on both sides. (may or may not need turning, depending on the amount of oil)
To cool, drain in a colander to keep tomatoes from becoming soggy. Salt to taste.

If you want your batter to be perfect every time, pick up some WhistleStop fried green tomato batter mix. If you can't find it at your local market, you can pick it up on our web site.

Y'all enjoy!
Sandi

From Brad... (of Palma):

Leave it to you to do a blogpost on fried green tomatoes and never use the phrase "fried green tomatoes" in the text! (It only appears to name the recipe.) Simply brilliant, and with only a hint of shameless self-promotion with the batter. Oh, I deleted my first post 'cause you'd probably have no idea who it was from, and I wanted you to (know who it was from).

Karla~ don't you think this is a great solution?
Brad'll do it~ that's me- shameless! You have to explain the 'caincetiv'.

This is the best answer I've heard. Much better than letting them go bad. Your recipe is the best. My son loves these.

How sad the humble tomato has caused so much concern and frying them sure is a great solution. Thanks for sharing your recipe.

Oh man, I luvs me some fried green tomatoes. We went to the ginormouse flea market in Canton, Texas a few months ago and the highlight for me was the food stand that served the most divine fried green tomatoes. Who'd a-thunk?

I'm wondering how those things would fit into Weight Watchers? Maybe if I used olive oil I could convince myself that they were "healthy". lol And like you said, I'd be preventing salmonella, right? Yeah. This is do-able. :)

I just have to say that Fried Green Tomatoes are one of my favorite foods and a great movie.

Hay-Hay~ You can fry tomatoes at home... why go out?
Alisun~ Good for you! I have given up on the gardening, by July the only one eating was that big fat green worm.
Jerry~ I need to be in the gym working off that pasta too.
